You know the routine. It’s a cold holiday morning, you’re still savoring your first cup of coffee, but you already have the oven preheating so that your Thanksgiving or Christmas turkey will be ready in time for guests.  There’s still stuffing to get ready and the bird needs to be done by no later than 2:00 pm. It’s tradition, right?

Well yes, roasting (or more accurately, baking) the turkey is the most common way to prepare that holiday bird, but there are other methods to consider as well.  Here I present three methods for cooking up a wonderful holiday turkey that you may not be familiar with.  Perhaps one of these will become your go-to recipe for cooking up a succulent holiday feast that the whole family will enjoy.

And with that, we’re off!

Where’s the time?

by Jerry on October 18, 2011

Post image for Where’s the time?

Normalcy.  It’s something that I would love to aspire to. unfortunately the whole darned world has been turned upside down for me over the past few months.  It’s not just my wife’s health issues, bu trying to balance schedules, sick kids, unpredictable days… And World of Warcraft, which, believe it or not, is also mostly about the food, as I’m a recipe whore there, too.

It’s not that I haven’t had things that should have been posted here. It’s that no matter how hard I try to budget time, there’s something that takes that little slice of productive time and tosses it right out the window.  Like infantigo and a trip to the ER, or three kids with a beginning of the school year cold.  We’ll not even begin to delve into the phone or email or twitter or G+ or all of the other distractions that the Internet has to offer.  Those are things that I am usually able to push to the side while I work.

I just haven’t had any time to work!

I know. I know. I should have squeezed in a post here or there, but it’s terribly difficult to adequately describe a flavor or the sensation of a great dish or a good craft beer in five minutes. I know.  I’ve tried. Those fitful attempts at writing aren’t even drafts worthy of updating.  They’re crap.

With any luck, this next few weeks will dissolve into a state of normalcy and with it, the time to get the 20+ half-written posts that are worth finishing will find their way to the pages of this space.

In short, I’m neither dead nor have I moved to the Bahamas. I just have a very large and unpredictable piece of “Life” revolving around me.

And that was my 7 minutes.  Time to make the kids dinner, because it’s mostly about the food for them, too.

Peace. I’m out.

Halloween Pot Pies

by Jerry September 28, 2011

Here’s a simple little idea to spruce up your Halloween dinners, or any other dinner that inclues a pot pie.  Skip the pie crust and roll out some puff pastry to any size you desire, then cut shapes out of the puff pastry dough to let the fillings show through. In my case this was [...]

Our home is a reflection – Or why I haven’t been writing.

Our home is a reflection of my state of being.  At least that’s what my wife tells me.  If that’s the case it’s been a rough few weeks.  Nothing is where it should be. The entire house is a shambles, from the kitchen to the office to the bedrooms.  It’s shameful. It’s horrid. It pains [...]

One hot mess after another

The past few weeks have been nothing short of chaos.  Our world gone from bright to bleak and back again. Schedules have been destroyed and rebuilt, only to fall to pieces again and we’ve spent far too much time in the E.R. for our own good. (The only plus side there being that I’m getting [...]

Anyone who has read anything posted here over the past few months will realize that I have an ongoing love affair with Jim Henson’s Muppets.  The Swedish Chef and the Cookie monster have already been featured here in the past, but I would be completely remis if I failed to mention the one muppet that [...]

This time on the Beer of the week I bring you a true Alaskan beer, Sockeye Red IPA from the Midnight Sun Brewing Company of Juneau Alaska.  Unfortunately for many of you, this beer is only available in Alaska, Oregon, Washington and California, so if you don’t live in the Pacific Northwest, you may have [...]

If you have been alive since 1969 and, by some chance, were ever a child watching television, you’ve probably stumbled across Sesame Street. If so, you’ve no doubt met up with another one of my culinary heroes, the Cookie Monster. Cookie (as he is called by his closer friends, though it is rumored that his [...]

Many of you may have noticed that there hasn’t been a lot going on at any of my blogs lately.  Please trust me that I say it isn’t because I didn’t wish there was.  It’s just that things have gotten in the way of writing, food and photography. There’s more going on than we can [...]

Weathering the storms – Eating what you have

It’s been a rough week.  The kind of week that causes panic, disarray and a large amount of stress. It was the kind of week that leads to reflections on life. To be honest it’s been that kind of month but it culminated last Monday and took an entire week to get through. Without going [...]
